This month marks the beginning of Mary Fallin’s third year as Oklahoma’s first female governor. When asked what her main goal is this next legislative session, Fallin didn’t hesitate.
“I want to raise the standard of living so Oklahoman’s can provide for their families and children.”
The governor said one of the best ways to do that is to attract top-flight businesses to the state that will employ Oklahomans with a solid paycheck and solid benefits.
Healthcare is another topic the governor will have to tackle when lawmakers come back to the Capitol for the new session that begins in early February.
When asked if she regrets rejecting millions of dollars sent by the federal government to the state that would have helped implement The Affordable Care Act (Obamacare) Fallin said, “Each governor has to do what’s best for their states”.
She went on to say, “I think President Obama’s plan is unaffordable and unworkable.”
Speaking of the president, the governor commented on his proposals to curb gun violence.
“Something I found of value to his discussions was talking about mental health service, knowing those who might be a threat who might have a gun and might have mental health issues,” she said. “So I think that discussion is certainly valuable.”
But the governor does not believe the answer lies with banning assault weapons or limiting how much ammunition a gun can hold.
“I think we have appropriate laws on our books,” she said. “You can use any type of thing if you want to harm someone. It can be a baseball bat, it can be someone driving up in a Ryder truck to a federal building and setting off a detonation.”
Just a few of the topics Gov. Fallin will certainly face as lawmakers do battle over the best way to do things in Oklahoma.
